How can I reduce the odor of my fish aquarium?
Q. I have a 20 gallon freshwater aquarium. The odor seems stronger then normal. I have had fish tanks in the past and they have not smelled as bad. Sometimes I can smell the odor of the tank when I walk into the door. You can also sometimes smell it as you walk past. The tank is cleaned every 2 weeks with a filter change. There is no algae. No missing fish. Can anyone give me advice on how to reduce or eliminate the foul odor? Thanks in advance. i will choose best answer very soon! Change the filter only twice a year? I don't think so. That is why you have bio-wheel. Also 25% water change and filter change weekly...too excessive and possibly dangerous to the health of the fish. Every other week I change the carbon filter, change… [cont.]

How do I get a musty odor out of a washing machine?
Q. My washing machine is about 10 years old and has a musty odor that transmits to the clothes. It is a top loading machine that has always used city water. A repairman said its because of mold and tried a bleach treatment. The odor returned about a month later. How can I permanently get rid of the musty odor?
Asked by Chris - Sat Nov 3 05:24:40 2007 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments

A. run the washer on a wash cycle with maybe a load of towels or whatever can be bleached. ad your laundry soap, about 1/2 cup bleach, 1/2 cup baking soda, and 3 tablespoons of white vinegar and use the largest water fill. and let it go. then just leave your washer lid open when not in use to help prevent it from coming back. i always wash my towels with a 1/2 cup of bleach each week and i leave the lid open when i am not using it and it never gets to smelling nasty.

How can I remove sweat odor from my hat?
Q. I have a hat, which is part of a work uniform. I wear it in hot environs and thus sweat profusely. It has developed a characteristic odor. I cannot wash it in the machine and do not want to send to the dry cleaners. Febreeze and other perfumes are not high on my list because of a sensitivity to them, and I merely want to eliminate the odor, not replace it. Any help will be graciously appreaciated.

A. My recomendation is to: go to your kitchen: grab the baking soda, go to your bathroom: grab your peroxide, locate a nail brush, and get a towel... then sit down and make a paste with the two and dip the brush into it and scrub the areas of concern... then with another liberally damp towel (after adequete scrubbing (and time passing) with reasonably sloppy amounts of paste) begin to remove the paste with the wet towel; rinsing and wringing the towel under a faucet. Then afterwords, dry the hat amply with a dry towel, then let air dry overnight (in an air conditioned house or low humidity somehow). Then there should be no problems. Then in a few weeks, if the smell returns, repeat the process... Good Luck! Oh by the way... My… [cont.]

How can i remove smoke odor from my closet?
Q. I live in an apartment, and my downstairs neighbors smoke (not just cigarettes, unfortunately). I do not. Now, my closet stinks of cigarette smoke, as do all of my clothes. Is there anything I can do to remove the odor from my closet, and a way to de-stink my clothes without having to launder them all? I've tried odor absorbing candles and Febreeze to no effect. Please help!
Asked by Raylyn - Sat Mar 15 21:07:45 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I think you should contact the apartment information people and tell them about this problem so they can end it. If that is impossible to do, (which it probebly is), do the following: 1. Cut open 4 lemons in half and place them in each corner of your closet. But first, cover them with seran wrap and poke little holes in them with a pen or knife. 2. Put a glade gel air freshener in your closet of the top so it removes bacteria in the air above your closet. 3. Spray Febreeze on your WALLS in your closet so it kills the smoke bacteria. 4. Open up your closet and put a fan next to it. Turn it on and place an air freshener on the holes in the fan (where the air blows out) and that should blow away the bad air germs and add some fresh smell. [cont.]

Why is there an awful odor coming from inside my NEW down coat?
Q. I bought 2 new down coats... the same style but 2 different colors. I wore one 2 weeks ago and wow while wearing it, I noticed that there was a disgusting smell coming from inside it that I noticed when I unzipped it. I wore the other one today and once again there was a disgusting/strong odor coming from inside of it. These coats are new and noticed the odor during my first wear. What is this smell? There are brand new coats. What should I do? I really like these coats a lot but the odor is bad. I used some Febreze before and yet the odor is still there... but not as much. I read online that the feathers have a bad smell when wet. Could it be that if I have the coat on and my upper body is warm (because the coat is very insulated) that I… [cont.]
Asked by JT C - Wed Jan 10 22:00:30 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Take it in to the cleaners. Sounds like maybe the quality of the feathers was not that great and they didn't clean the down properly before using it in the coat. All down is not cleaned equally. It's important to get it cleaned because allergens could have been left in the feathers as well. A professional dry cleaner should be able to help you with the problem.

How to eliminate dog urine odor at the source?
Q. My labrador retriever has a problem with urinary incontinence. She has been on a couple different meds with negligible results. She still pees when she sleeps. We have resigned ourselves to having to keep her in doggie diapers for the rest of her life. This isn't so bad--she's energetic and eats well, so it doesn't seem to affect her too much. But the odor is overwhelming. Is there something like a pill I can give her to remove the urine odor before it hits the diaper?

A. Applecider vinegar in her drinking water. It Phs the system and naturally the urine and removes the majority of that offending odor.

Why does my furnace create an odor when running?
Q. This is my 1st winter in a cottage that I am renting. Every time that my furnace is running, there is a bad odor throughout the basement where the furnace is located. It smells pretty bad. My neighbors have the same problem. My neighbors house is the same as mine and has the same owners. The furnace is really old also. What is causing this odor? It's a gas furnace.
Asked by AmsterF - Thu Jan 8 15:26:26 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Dirt and dust often collect in the furnace during the summer when it is not used, then when it is run for the first week or so, it will produce an odor that's not pleasant. But if the smell persists, then maybe mice have gotten into it and made their nests. You may be smelling the mice urine and droppings as it all heats up when you run your furnace. It would be a good idea to inspect the furnace and the duct-ways for evidence of mice nests or other debris including mold.

Who should I call to get rid of foul odor in home?
Q. We just noticed a foul odor in our upstairs hallway in a very specific place. The bedrooms/bathrooms don't have the smell, just the hallway. There are two vents nearby but it is hard to tell if the odor is coming through these. It smells like stinky fish (we haven't been cooking any). The odor is very strong. What specific business should I call to check it to investigate this?

Asked by WebDisMe - Tue May 27 00:05:03 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's very likely. It would be a good idea to call someone in to get rid of them. They leave feces and nesting material that will mold and cause harmful allergens and bacteria to get into your air. Sometimes they may even die in your walls and that's a smell you really don't want to live with. (Had a squirrel die in a wall once. Ick.) Especially if you are smelling it- that can't be good. I would call a professional and see about getting them evicted. Then you will need to find out how they are getting in and block their door ways. Then I would look into getting the walls cleaned out. I don't know how that's done. Maybe look into air purifiers, too. We had a bird problem in the attic of our previous house that made my husband sick. It is… [cont.]

How to remove body odor from clothes?
Q. My son plays sports - every day. His Tshirts smell of body odor. I usually wash them in vinegar and hot water - which helps, but sometimes it doesn't get rid of the entire smell. Any suggestions?
Asked by Lou - Sun Mar 11 23:00:49 2007 - - 7 Answers - 1 Comments

A. You can try a stronger bleach to help, but if there are colors that's out. I sometimes spray my clothes down with this stuff called Approach. I do it towards the end of the day when I've had a busy one and want to eliminate any body odor that's built up during the day. It should work the same for you. Just spray the clothes all over with a good amount of spray and that should eliminate the odor. Good luck!
