Etymology

From the Old French gros, from the Latin grossus (“‘thick (of diameter, depth, etc.), in Medieval Latin great, big’”), a different word from Latin crassus (“‘solid, thick, dense, fat, gross, etc.’”), of which it has been supposed to be a corruption.
