Q. well am thinking about starting my on business any ideas on how i can get started and wat should my business be
Asked by JJ - Tue Jun 3 16:24:55 2008 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments
A. you've got it back to front. First you look for a niche in the market that needs to be addressed or you note a shortage of demand. If you are not addressing these keep your money in your pocket. Business opportunities come from hobbies expanded, new technology (e.g. become the Blue Ray expert), niche markets e.g. something a cultural group wants or needs, changes in law create opportunities for experts to emerge, changes in demographics e,g, more children in the area. Look around. Ask people around you. How to start will depend on the idea - some businesses start part time until they get enough customers to move on - some start as web based businesses and others just have to bite the bullet and go bigtime. Whatever you do please do… [cont.]

Q. I have my own wedding and event planning business and I am interested in selling in it. I really want to know the format of a business proposal for selling a business and I would really like to see an example of a business proposal for selling a business (comes with existing advertising and a website). I want a sample so that I can get an idea. Please do not tell me tips. I really would like to see a sample of a proposal for selling a business.

A. You can't post a Proposal for Sale of Business here. It is a comprehensive document similar to a business plan with dozens to hundreds of pages. Contact a broker like VR Business Brokers and see if you can get help. Yours is a unique business driven by personal contacts and is not easily sold.

What business minor should I get in addition to human resource management?
Q. As a psych major I am well aware that my major is useless on its own so I am going to get some background in business by majoring in human resource management. My college also offers seven other business minors, accounting, business administration, economics, international business, management, management information systems, marketing, and personal financial planning. Which of these would be beneficial along with my HRM minor?

A. Hiii.. I think you have to choose the Marketing section in Human Resource Management(HRM) because in marketing you get the nice job in the good reputed company on a high post..

What does a business analyst do? What course do you take to become a business analyst?
Q. I came across a chart showing the avarage salaries of business analysts in IT/Computer software/Computer hardware. I do not know what a business analyst does exactly. What course should I take in college to become a business analyst. Currently I'm planing on getting a degree in Business with IT in college, will that enable me to become a business analyst?

A. Yes, the courses you speak of will help you to become a Business Analyst. A BA can be on the client side or the IT side. If on the client side, they are interfacing with work group domains that process the work and review what they need. They generate requirements and then work with the IT side to update or generate processes and applications to fullfil the business needs. If you're a BA on the IT side of the house, then you're taking all the requirements and developing processes and application solutions. Your job is to work with the client to generate a business solutions document (there are many names for it) and get signoff. Then, you need to make sure that solution becomes reality by working with systems analysts, programmers,… [cont.]

A. How about a book store, if you are looking retail? I cant say if it would work in your town, you need to do marketing research to see what would succeed in your town. Also in business .. Location, Location, Location is VERY important to success .. not only do you need the right business, you need the right location .. Passion, YES .. you do have to work long hours but passion because you believe in what you are doing. I work from home and have the utmost compassion and belief for what I do, I believe that is what brings me success .. If you don't like books, don't like to read .. then a book store probably wont make sense. Did deep .. Only you know what you really want to do. GL!

What kind of business license do I need for an internet business or ebay business?
Q. I am planning a business. I will start out with baskets for new babies and if all goes well I will make the extra investment for wedding baskets, and then so on and forth. By baskets I mean gift baskets. I have researched local business license, but I am not sure if a local business is the right way to go, so I am thinking internet or Ebay. What kind of license do you need for these types of businesses.

A. The requirements vary according to your state. Call the business license office for your county and just ask them if you need a business license to operate an internet store. I live in Georgia, and in my county, you do.

Why is big business considered evil by the left but big government is considered wonderful?
Q. Big business produces a product, creates job and creates wealth. Big government creates large inefficient agencies, gobbles up wealth, creates waste and is corrupt. Big business needs to be watched and when found corrupt the corrupt need to go to jail. Small business is just as corrupt as big business. It just doesn't make the national news. So why is big business demonized by the left but big government loved? Our founding fathers didn't trust government at all so why does the left love it?

Can I operate a business outside the country with a sole proprietorship type of business?
Q. I'd like to operate a Business and Trade Organization outside the US. If I have a sole-proprietorship type of business, can I do that? If I decide to form an alliance with another business outside the country, would I have to change into a Corporation?

A. You can absolutely operate as a Sole Proprietor and still have have alliance with another company. Whether you have strategic partnership or contractual partnership, you should be able to show revenue on your tax form as a sole proprietor. The taxes are very complicated, depending on which company you are operating in because I know someone who has a similar business model. There are accountants that specialize in this area and you can consult them. Also feel free to sign up on where you can find and network with small businesses globally. Feel free to link with my company (Paul Graphics).

What percentage of a business do you typically have to give to an investor funding a business idea?
Q. I'm going to be starting a business and I have a person that is willing to handle all of the development costs etc. Since it is an online business, the start up costs are pretty low for a business, under $10,000 definitely, probably under $5,000. In this type of situation, what portion of the company is given to the investor?
Asked by ShadowASL - Thu Apr 26 12:03:04 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. In a TYPICAL venture deal (yours is not, of course, since it's so small), it would be pretty common to give seed round investors 20-30% of the equity. Another way to look at it is that private equity investors expect to get 15x-20x their investment if the company is very successful. If your company (assuming success) might have a market cap of $1MM, then 20x on a $5M investment would only be 10%. It's usually a negotiating process in any case.

How big should a business be before the owner finally delegates responsibilities?
Q. I am in the family business and my mom is clearly strained... We are blessed to have business hand over fist even in this recession but that is not my problem, or question... My question is how can a small business owner learn to lay back enjoy the fruits of their labor??? I mean she has owned this insurance agency for 30 yrs. and has nursed it from ONE policy to what it is today? But her health is declining as she is still trying to take payments, pictures of homes, etc. on what should be considered now at least a "mid sized" business?

A. It sounds like you are at that point. If it feels like too much, it probably is and if you are in the black, you can definitely outsource now. If you are concerned about handling the legal aspects, book keeping, etc. of a new hire, you can go through a temp. agency first. That way, you pay the agency and they handle payroll, etc. for their employee. The agency can coach you through it. You can always keep the person on, too, if it works out.

What kind of business can I start in a warehouse building?
Q. My husband has a machine shop and only uses about 1/2 his building. I would like to start a business in the other half. I wanted to partition off a room for an office and do bookkeeping and then I was thinking about maybe a document shredding business or a document storage business would be good - any other ideas? Thanks! The zoning would not be a problem. This building is located in the center of town off a main street through town. I currently work for an accounting firm and you would not believe the paper we go through - we use a shredding service and have a storage building. Doctors offices and lawyers also have a lot of documents that cannot be thrown in the garbage because of the information they contain. Thanks for the input -… [cont.]

A. Any kind of storage would be a natural, and easy. Or how about a combination coffee shop and tool supply?

What business credit cards are not attached to my personal credit?
Q. Hello, I am trying to find out how to build my business credit without being attached to my personal credit score. I would like to know if anybody has information regarding what credit cards are available to do this. I would love any free information or links to sites that can tell me how to build my business credit. Thanks!!

A. People think once they screw up their own personal credit the next thing they can do is have a business and get credit that way but it doesn't work like that. Your personal social security number and credit rating are going to be used to extablish credit when you start out and even well beyond. Added Reality is as a beginning business you are NOT going to go out and secure credit using an unknown/ unestablished business name or identifying number!

How can I submit my business to google maps when my business is a service for people in their homes?
Q. Usually when I search for a type of business google has many names and addresses of the businesses immediately and it's included on google maps. But if my business consists of services primarily provided in a customer's home (and I don't have an office yet) can it still be listed? Without an address?

A. There's a new feature in Google Places for businesses that allows you to list a "service area." When you do this you can also exclude your address. Not showing your address seems to lead to lower rankings, so I would definitely add it if you get an office sometime down the line, but this will at least get you listed for now.

Does obtaining a business degree mean you have to start your own business?
Q. I've always thought that the meaning of a busniess administration degree is so that an individual can start his/her own business. Is that true? What types of jobs are out there for people who just want to work in a business field?

A. A business administration degree qualifies you to manage a business that is already up and running, it does not qualify you to own a business. As for types of jobs for people who want to work in a business field, they range from mail room clerks to chairman of the board.
